Celebrity Cruises Celebrates the Best in Contemporary Art on Equinox

Celebrity Cruises continues its tradition of showcasing some of the finest examples of contemporary art aboard its newest ship, Celebrity Equinox, which recently set sail on its inaugural cruise out of London. Entitled “The Essence of Equinox,” this high-caliber collection consists of nearly 500 original works that are rarely seen outside major museums, art galleries and private collections.

The collection features paintings, sculptures and photography by a number of noted artists. These include abstract expressionist works by Joan Mitchell and John Chamberlain; pop-art masterpieces by Roy Lichtenstein; humorous urban-life observations by Red Grooms; colorful geometric designs by Sol LeWitt; landscape photography by Andreas Gursky and works by Parisian Louise Bourgeois, influential German painter Gerard Richter and the provocative Young British Artist (YBA) Damien Hirst.

Celebrity also commissioned two site-specific installations for the Equinox; one is by the Argentinean duo Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt, consisting of an enormous suspended vase – dotted with more than 500,000 Swarovski crystals – holding a live, 18-foot-tall tree in the upper portion of the ship’s sweeping Grand Foyer. The second commissioned installation, entitled “Still Life for Leisure,” by Los Angeles artist Jose Pardo, transforms Celebrity Equinox’s Ensemble Lounge vestibule into a site for relaxation with a minimal cushioned bench and other furnishings set amid a blend of color and light.

Guests sailing on Celebrity Equinox enjoy a resort-like experience with amenities and services similar to those found on Celebrity Solstice. Among the most intriguing is the industry’s first "lawn club," a half-acre country-club atmosphere featuring real grass; the ship also has 10 dining venues, including several created by noted hospitality designer Adam Tihany with menus pairing classic and contemporary selections created by noted chef, restaurateur and Celebrity’s vice president of culinary operations, Jacques Van Staden.

Celebrity Cruises offers comfortably sophisticated, upscale vacation experiences with highly personalized service, exceptional dining, and extraordinary attention to detail. Celebrity sails in Alaska, California, Canada/New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Galapagos Islands, Hawaii, the Pacific Coast, the Panama Canal and South America. The line also offers unique cruisetour vacations in Alaska, Canada, Europe and South America. Celebrity’s fleet, including Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Equinox, will be joined by Celebrity Eclipse in 2010, a fourth Solstice-class ship in 2011 and a fifth in 2012.
