Bimini: A Near and Exotic Choice for Vacationers

Discovered in the 1500's by Ponce de Leon in his quest for the Fountain of Youth, the island of North Bimini is situated just 48 miles off the coast of South Florida. This colorful island's abundance of white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters continues to attract yachting and watersport enthusiasts searching for a relaxing haven that offers something for the whole family.

Temperatures range from the low to mid-70s during the winter and low to mid-80s during the summer months.

Bimini is easily accessible by private boat and private or scheduled air service. Scheduled air is available from Fort Lauderdale on Continental Connection (Gulfstream International Airlines), Lynx Air International and Bimini Island Air. The flight time is approximately 25 minutes.

The Bimini Bay Resort features 160 vacation rentals comprised of condominiums, loft-like treehouses and single family homes. The resort also offers two full-service marinas, infinity pool, grille, Swedish and Thai massage services, children's playground, event facilities, tennis and bocce ball courts and a fine dining restaurant overlooking the ocean.

The Bahamian-inspired architecture of Bimini Bay Resort's condominiums, treehouses and homes showcase the color palettes reflective of the ocean and flowers native to the island. Painted in tropical hues of green, blue, peach, yellow, pink and turquoise and accented with white windows, railings and doors, all units offer water views of the Atlantic Ocean and/or Bimini Bay. Accommodations are elegantly appointed and all offer full-service kitchens or kitchenettes.

The resort includes:

  • A full-service marina that has 136 floating boat slips that accommodate vessels up to 128 feet. It also features its own Customs & Immigration office allowing guests to tie up and clear customs immediately. The Bahamian government recently completed an environmentally-friendly dredging of the Bimini Bay harbor resulting in a new channel that can accommodate mega yachts.

  • A mega-yacht marina complex that currently has 96 slips (for owners and hotels guests) that can accommodate mega-yachts up to 205 feet. On the horizon are a yacht club, large infinity pool, restaurant with sushi bar, fitness center, salon and convention center.

  • Casa Lyon - the resort's fine dining restaurant that combines French and Mediterranean design and offers Caribbean fusion cuisine. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the ocean from the interior or outside on its well-appointed patio and deck.

  • The Infinity Pool - offering magnificent views of the ocean, the pool is contemporary in design and features white loungers, umbrellas and beds. Its adjacent Aquagrille provides food & beverage service throughout the day. Menu items include conch delicacies, hamburgers, chicken fingers, rum punch and frozen cocktails.

  • Massage - Swedish and Thai massage services can be performed poolside under a cabana or in the privacy of the guest's condominium or villa.

  • A beach - guests can enjoy the five miles of white sand beaches lining the property and the resort's giant palapas providing shade.

  • A playground - A sandy children's recreational area is a favorite among younger guests, featuring a jungle gym with slides and various climbing elements.

  • Tennis and Bocce Ball - Guests can hone in on their tennis and bocce ball skills; courts are conveniently located by the children's playground.

Rates for the 2007-March 2008 season range from $250 a night for a one bedroom studio with kitchenette to $2,400 a night for a four bedroom oceanfront home.

Real estate opportunities are also available for vacationers who wish to have a more permanent place on the island including direct oceanfront lots and exclusive home sites on the resort's private island. Plans are almost complete for a Fisherman's Village and are underway for a Conrad Hotel, casino, spa, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed links golf course and a second private island.
