The Los Angeles Zoo Association Sponsors a Real Kenyan Safari

Wildlife and nature enthusiasts can embark on a 12-day excursion this summer that takes travelers on a safari through the African outdoors. The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), a private, non-profit organization, is sponsoring "Luxury Under Canvas: The Best of Kenya," a trip organized by Classic Escapes.

Scheduled from May 26 to June 6, the trip originates in Los Angeles and begins with a day in Nairobi at the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Nature Center, where guests can feed the Rothschild giraffe and visit the former home of Karen Blixen, the author of "Out of Africa." The next two days are spent at the Samburu Reserve at the edge of Kenya, home to elephants, birdlife and zebras.

At Lake Nakuru National Park, travelers can look for some of the 450 species of birds that nest near the park and go sightseeing for lions, leopards, warthogs or rhinos. Two days will be spent at the park before travelers move on to three days at Maasai Mara Reserve, which has been called the "Jewel of Africa." The reserve is known for its large and varied animal migration. Travelers will also visit the Northern Serengeti.

Nature enthusiasts will wrap up their trip in Nairobi, before flying back to Los Angeles via London. Throughout the trip, travelers will be accompanied by local naturalists and zoo guides familiar with African wildlife.

The 12-day trip is $5,395 plus taxes of $565 per person, double occupancy.  A single supplement is $995 per person. The package includes round-trip flights, all land travel and guides, superior (or similar) accommodations, breakfast in Nairobi and all meals while on safari, entry fees, and hotel/lodging taxes and gratuities for baggage handling. The “land package only” can be purchased for $3,595 per person, double occupancy, for those who wish to arrange their own air travel to/from Los Angeles.  The same taxes and single supplement rates apply. The fees and dates are subject to change.

The trip is operated by Classic Escapes, whose mission is to provide educational and entertaining experiences that nurture and directly support diverse wildlife and cultures around the world.

For an additional fee, travelers can take a one-hour morning balloon safari and a half-day trip to Lake Victoria, both requiring advance reservations, while in Maasai Mara.  Also available is a five-day post-trip extension to Amboseli and Tsavo from June 5-11, which offers two days each in Amboseli National Park/Mount Kilimanjaro and in Tsavo West National Park.  A minimum of five passengers is required for this extension.??The visit to Amboseli/Tsavo is $1,995 per person, double occupancy, and $395 per person, single room supplement (based on group size of six). In Maasai Mara, the balloon safari is $450 per adult (ages 12 and up) and $275 per child (ages 8-11), and the trip to Lake Victoria is $496 per adult and $305 per child.??Founded in 1963, GLAZA supports the zoo’s work as an educational resource for the citizens of Los Angeles, and as an international center for the conservation of endangered wildlife.
